*Oxygen is used to release energy from food during the process of cellular respiration...*In addition to energy,the breakdown of the food also release carbon dioxide and water..*If carbon dioxide level is allowed to accumulate in the tissues,it will form carbonic acid which will poison the cells..*The carbon dioxide from the tissues diffuses into the blood and is carried to the lungs in the form of bicarbonate ions,in solution in the blood plasma and as carbhaemoglobin..*Gas exchange in lungs removes CO2
